I tried this… When he dropped the ball away from me, I started playing with the other ball and he came over, interested. When he didn’t go get the other ball that he dropped, I put away the ball I was playing with. That caused him to go back and get the other ball, where I started playing with my ball, and he dropped his ball at my feet. Then I threw my ball and repeated. It WORKS! It’s only been 2 days and we can play fetch for 30mins! I can’t wait until I only need one ball! AMAZING!

I have the exact same problem with my German Shepherd! I’d really like to play fetch with him, but this gets in the way.

My dog will fetch and always drop the ball about 5-10 metres in front of me and just stay there and stare at it in front of him. I don’t know how to make him come all the way. If I make him come he comes but leaves the ball where he dropped it. I’ve stood there for about 5 minutes before and he just stared at the ball didn’t move. Any suggestions to make him bring it all the way?

try cutting a tennis ball open put some treats in it and throw it and they’ll go try and take the treat inside then theyre going to get tired cuz they might not be able to open it so they’ll come to you and drop it in front of you because they know your the one that can take the treat out so you take it out and give it to them

That’s why you need to give him Food as a reward when he gets the Ball. Call him back then he’ll come to you and let go of the ball and give him the treat

I have a baby Rotti, and if I toss a toy for him to fetch, he just barks and slowly walks up to it and brings it to his bed. I only had him for 2 days though.

I’m going to go try this right now.. Usually I get frustrated getting the ball back and stop playing, but now I’m going to try this. Hope it works, Thanks!

no don’t, because then he will think he will get a treat if he doesn’t give you the ball. Use another object that doesn’t mean he eats it.

lol guys every one that has truoble doing this then get a flipping toy or ball that the dog likes!! and then give it to him!!
and when the dog comes to u try pulling the ball way from his mouth if that dont work give him a treat and take the ball and or get another ball with u like eric did hes… if the dog dont come to u then tell him to come…. try it it worked for all my 7 dogs

In order to get your dog interested in retrieving, toss the ball just a foot or two away…not all the way across the yard.
Smearing a little cheese on the ball might also help.
I’ve also been taught to get all excited and make a big deal out of the fetch game. I’ll use a high pitched voice and say “hup, hup, hup…get the ball…hup, hup, hup” while juggling the ball.
If you act excited about playing fetch, the dog will too.
